Fabric Guide

Original Wax Fabric
The original wax fabric is also referred to as “oilskin” and “heavyweight wax”.

This is really the backbone to the Driza-Bone range and is featured in the “Classic Wax” category – many other fabrics have come and gone over the years including Durapel, Drizapel, Summerweight, Fortress to name but a few but the original wax has always remained the same and true to its roots. The original wax garments are currently available in traditional brown or olive (other colours that have previously featured have been black and navy)

The signature oilskin cloth is a sturdy 100% cotton fabric which has been coated with Driza-Bone’s uniquely formulated oil and wax finish, which gives the oilskin its distinctive weatherproof and breathable character.

The original wax garments can be re-proofed with the DC21 Driza-Bone Oilskin Reproofer and smaller areas i.e. elbow patches, shoulders etc can be topped up using the DC93 Driza-Bone Oilskin Reproofer pump spray; for further information please refer to our re-waxing guide.

Always store your waxed garment in a dry, well-ventilated area. Do not place in a cupboard or plastic bag for long periods of time, otherwise it will become mouldy. If your beloved coat has become mouldy, Driza-Bone recommend hanging it in full sun for a couple of weeks; if the garment is still mouldy after this time, hand-wash with pure soap and reproof with the DC21 Driza-Bone Oilskin Reproofer.

Avanti “Dry Wax” Fabric
The Avanti fabric was launched in the Autumn of 2012 and is a relatively new addition to the range. The Avanti is a 100% cotton cloth which has been treated with a paraffin wax and mineral oil blend. The Avanti is a mid-weight fabric and has a cloth weight of approximately 9oz per square yard.

The Avanti fabric is currently only available in black and it is used on two styles, the DC103 Riding Coat and the DC104 Short Coat (DC106 matching hood available for both coats).

The Avanti fabric offers all of the same weatherproof features as the original wax, however it is lighter in weight and therefore will not offer as much warmth and wind resistance. It is also worth noting that with the nature of a lighter weight fabric the durability will not be as strong and rugged as the classic wax.

Always store your waxed garment in a dry, well-ventilated area. Do not place in a cupboard or plastic bag for long periods of time, otherwise it will become mouldy. If your beloved coat has become mouldy, Driza-Bone recommends hanging it in full sun for a couple of weeks.

ADVISORY: Please be aware, the nature of oilskin/waxed garments means they have an oily residue and this can rub-off onto other fabrics, furnishings and garments especially a new garment; so please be careful when wearing or storing your coat, and do not place next to porous surfaces.
